Your New Pup

Welcome to the Avatinni Family

Thank you for your purchase of an Avatinni Kennels ASTCD (Stumpy). You are now the proud owner of a energetic, intelligent dynamo that will bring and you and your family many hours of enjoyment, companionship, with maybe a smidgen of cheekiness and mischief.

More importantly, you are helping to keep alive one of Australia's more important working dog breeds. In this modern age, it is all too easy to forget that at one time Australia relied heavily on its pastoral industry. Underpinning our rural heritage were the tireless breeds; such as the Kelpie, ACD and the Stumpy.

Whilst the first two breeds are well represented, Stumpies, especially reds, are becoming scarcer by the day. We ask that you please do your part in promoting and protecting the ASTCD so future generations can enjoy the mateship of this loyal breed.

Grooming

Requirements for grooming adult dogs are minimal. Weekly brushing with a slicker brush and a small tooth comb will keep the coat in good condition. Bathing should be done when the dog gets dirty. Facial whiskers should not be removed. Toe nails should be kept short and dull. The toe nails can grow quickly and become very sharp.

Exercise

The "Stumpy" has a very high energy level and therefore needs daily exercise, a secure place to run, and mind stimulating work. With a high level of stamina, this breed can work stock all day in adverse condition for which it was developed. Hiking, backpacking, and obedience training is essential for healthy body and mind for the lifetime of the dog.

Training

Easily trained using reward based methods. Problem solving and comical in nature. Temperament ranges from people friendly to a bit wary of strangers. Great with known persons. Can be a bit of a watch dog and alert owners to strangers nearing their property. Amenable to judges exams in the show rings.

Puppy Nutrition

Your pup has been weaned and at the time of purchase is on a diet of good quality mince (beef and chicken) and soft puppy kibble. Pups are being fed three (3) times a day and this should be continued during their higher growth stages for good development. Transition from puppy kibble is recommended around 12 months of age. Soft treats differing from the normal diet can be used for training purposes and will invoke a positive training response.

Ongoing Nutrition

Good quality foods that are formulated for applicable adult life stages is recommended. Feeding amounts will vary depending upon the activity levels the dog gets daily. Two Meals equally spaced during the day will suffice. Free feeding can be done as long as the dog does not get overweight. A high energy feed that has non-GMO grains seems to work well with these dogs.
